Responsibility
Although the Writing Specialist may have expertise in writing in the sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, and/or Medical), they support students, faculty, and staff across the liberal arts curriculum. Candidates should demonstrate responsiveness toward and understanding of diverse student backgrounds, especially with regard to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, culture, ability/disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity and have a willingness to facilitate the university’s mission to develop global citizens. Meet with students one-with-one in either scheduled appointments or on a walk-in basis. Participate in services and projects that support the University Writing Center mission such as workshops, developing online and print resources for writing and teaching, and participating in outreach projects. Date Posted: 7/10/2024 Soka University of America invites applications for a part-time Science Writing Specialist to join the University Writing Center staff. The Science Writing Specialist’s primary function is to assist students, especially those concentrating in Life Sciences and Environmental Studies, in all phases of the writing process and to foster long-term development of critical thinking and academic writing skills. Although the Writing Specialist may have expertise in writing in the sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, and/or Medical), they support students, faculty, and staff across the liberal arts curriculum. The Writing Center values diverse teaching and learning styles and seeks to create a welcoming environment for the entire SUA community. Tutor training and professional development are ongoing as a member of the Writing Center community. This part-time position is for approximately 15-23 hours per week up to a maximum of 990 hours per academic year, including at least one evening shift. The academic year begins mid-August and continues through May: • Mondays through Fridays from 9:00am to 7:00pm • Sundays from 11:00am to 7:00pm Candidates should demonstrate responsiveness toward and understanding of diverse student backgrounds, especially with regard to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, culture, ability/disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity and have a willingness to facilitate the university’s mission to develop global citizens. Minimum Qualifications: Education • Required – Master’s Degree or higher. • Preferred – Master’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Sciences with additional experience in Composition, Rhetoric, or Applied Linguistics. Experience • Required – Some teaching or tutoring experience • Preferred – Fluency in multiple languages is a plus. Experience working with neurodiverse students is a plus. Previous Writing Center experience is a plus.
