Description The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter performance science and its useful applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, performance and nutrition research. It features integrated cellular, tissue, & human research programs. Fellowship will be in the Military Performance Division, whose goal is to conduct research to enhance the performance of military occupational tasks and to prevent performance decrements due to physical overload and musculoskeletal injuries. What will I be doing? You will have the opportunity to participate in two to four research projects: one involving the prediction of acute mountain sickness at altitude, another involving the development of novel sensors to detect oxygen saturation, a third involving the prediction of heat stroke, and a fourth involving genomic prediction of environmental injuries. Why should I apply? Under the guidance of a mentor, you will learn how to write research protocols and submit grants for extramural funding to optimize the health and performance of Warfighters deployed to extreme environments. You will learn how to organize and standardize human data collection procedures, conduct an independent research program to answer important military questions on injury and performance, interact with Soldier units, submit documents for Institutional Review Board clearance, conduct literature reviews, and apply a broad range of statistical and machine learning techniques to human data collected in the field. Where will I be located? Natick, Massachusetts. Please note this opportunity may include some travel. What is the anticipated start date? The USARIEM is ready to make appointments as soon as possible. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Appointment Length This is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for up to four additional years, depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. About USARIEM The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), in Natick, Massachusetts, is recognized as the DoD's premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. Military guidance has been published for operations in heat, cold, and high-altitude environments and nutrition for health and performance. About ORISE This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Qualifications The qualified candidate should have or be near completion of a Master's or Doctoral degree in Environmental Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Molecular Biology, Applied Anatomy and Physiology, or a closely related field. Degree must be received within 5 years of the appointment start date.
