Responsibility
You will lead, manage, and direct a team of 138 subject matter experts at 38 state veterans’ offices across the Commonwealth. The Director reports to the Deputy Commissioner and participates as a member of the DVS Leadership Team to fulfill directorate and agency objectives as established by the Code of Virginia, Commissioner, and the Executive Team. With minimum supervision, the incumbent will oversee directorate-wide operations and has authority and responsibility for the strategic direction of the mission, outcomes, and performance. The Director is responsible for overseeing the comprehensive administrative and transformation operations for the Benefits portfolio in alignment with the strategic goals of the agency, directs and manages the directorates chain of leadership, including supervision and development of direct reports, manages and ensures the integrity of the directorate’s budget, and works in conjunction with the Deputy Commissioner and the appropriate agency contact on the directorate’s legislative, budgetary, and strategic planning processes. Works collaboratively between all DVS programs and services. Acts as a representative of DVS, supporting speaking engagements, presentations, and other partner requests for the agency. As necessary, works with the Executive Director of the Veterans Services Foundation (VSF) on the management of grants and donations. The Director will also work collaboratively with the agency Director of Research and Program Evaluation, the Director of Agency Management Services, the Chief Financial Officer, the Human Resources Director, the Chief Technology Officer, the Communications Director, the Policy Analyst, and the Chief of Staff to effectively coordinate support for section operations

The work done by the Benefit Services team changes lives. Working on behalf of Virginia’s veterans, we file approximately 20,000 new disability compensation claims each year with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affair (VA). The successful award of a disability compensation claim provides both financial compensation for service-connected wounds and injuries, but also priority access to VA medical care.
